Traffic Considerations
Never underestimate Oahu traffic. Build significant buffers into your timeline:
- Waikiki to North Shore: 45 min (no traffic) to 2+ hours (rush hour)
- Waikiki to Ko Olina: 35 min to 1.5 hours
- Waikiki to Windward: 25 min to 1 hour
- Rush hours: 6-9am (into Honolulu), 3-7pm (out of Honolulu)
Weather Patterns
Oahu's weather varies dramatically by location:
- South Shore (Waikiki): Drier, less rain, more consistent
- Windward (Kailua/Kaneohe): More frequent rain showers, lush and green
- North Shore: Variable; winter brings big waves and occasional storms
- West Side (Ko Olina): Driest area, most reliable sunshine
Rain on the windward side often means beautiful weather on the leeward side. Have backup locations in different microclimates. A quick drive can change everything.
